The Ministry of Public Administration (MPA) through the Public Service Academy (PSA) is conducting two (2) four-day workshops on “Developing Leadership Skills for Middle Level Officers” from March 2, 2015 to March 13, 2015 at the Government Training Centre, Chaguaramas.
Approximately 35 persons from various Ministries and agencies are participating in the programme which would help them to understand and develop some of the core competencies that Public Service Officers require to be effective leaders.
Coordinating the programme is Mr. Christian Harragin a fellow from the Hay Group, a global consulting firm that assists organisations across the world get their people strategies right and achieve their objectives.
The programme has three phases. In the “pre-workshop” phase, participants receive reading material and are required to keep a log of leadership practices. The second phase takes place in the classroom where participants are exposed to innovative yet proven strategies such as the “Buddy System”, “Email Coaching” and practical assignments which they complete both at work and at home. In the third phase, participants receive coaching via e-mail for a three-month period after the classroom sessions have ended.
Minister of Public Administration, the Honourable Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan said, “I am very pleased that we are collaborating with the Hay Group and Mr. Harrigan for this leadership development session. The Hay Group is renowned for the work they have done and continue to do in the area of leadership. I have no doubt that this learning opportunity will develop and strengthen leadership skills and capacities of Middle Level Officers in the Public Service to better support the renewal and modernisation thrust which is underway.”
This workshop is one of a number of training opportunities offered to public officers by the MPA to build management and leadership capability in the public service. Other programmes include Problem and Decision Making; Ethics in the Public Service; Developing Effective Policy; Implementing Sustainable Change and Supervisory Management.
