PUBLIC SERVICE WEEK PRESS CONFERENCE

New shape of the Public Service Explained

“From Gold to Diamond” is the theme of the Public Service Week of activities scheduled to take place from June 16th 2012. This theme reflects the new structure of the Public Service, which along with the Public Service Week of activities will be highlighted in a Press Conference on Friday 8th June, 2012 at the Old Fire Station, Corner hart and Abercromby Streets Port of Spain from 10:00 am to 11:30 am.

The Minister has emphasized that there must be a strengthening of the centre of the Government because the present structure, which is shaped like a pyramid, is bottom heavy and that many people who perform low-level tasks are either qualified for work at the higher levels of the service or are prepared to undergo training to take advantage of the many opportunities for promotion now being opened up by the Government. She has promised, “We’re going to require more delegation of authority and devolution of decision-making in the Public Service. This requires strengthening the professional streams within the Public Service. The next level will be Management Support Officers. This will be the avenue for upward mobility for clerical officers and it will create the diamond shape that we see as the architecture of the future – senior managers, a large group of professionals and managerial officers services, and a diminishing number of low-level jobs mainly because of the opportunities for advancement that we will create.”

Other events in commemoration of the 50th anniversary include a 5K walk/run on the 16th June 2012 at the Queen Park Savannah. Starting point is Queen Park West (opposite Memorial Park). Interested persons are reminded to register through any family member who is employed with a Ministry or Government office. Deadline date for registration is 8th June.

All Ministries and Agencies of the Government are participating in an Open House initiative which is free to the public and will take place in Port-of-Spain from 18th June to 23rd June and on Harris Promenade, San Fernando on 20th June. The Open House is closed on June 19, 2012 because of the Labour Day holiday.
